Carotid artery ultrasound
Benefits: Detects narrowed arteries, assesses stroke/paralysis risk, diagnoses atherosclerosis, and measures the thickness of the carotid artery wall in the neck.
Recommended groups: Individuals aged 35 years and older with high risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol), smokers, those with a family history of vascular disease, and those experiencing fainting, dizziness, or numbness/weakness on one side of the body.
Procedure: No fasting is required; the procedure can be performed immediately and takes approximately 15-20 minutes. The radiologist will apply gel to the ultrasound probe and gently rub it on both sides of the neck.
Limitations: May be difficult to perform in individuals with short necks, severe obesity, or very thick plaque that obstructs the image.
Results: Provides analysis of blood flow velocity and plaque size, allowing for immediate assessment of risk and treatment options.
